Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the SHEER framework and how it can help your organization.

SHEER is a set of metrics and scoring system for evaluating the depth to which AI was used in creating a work. It provides a standardized way to communicate AI involvement, fostering transparency and trust between makers and consumers.

The five areas AI can be used when creating a work are: Source, History, Execution, Evaluation, and Refinement. To learn more about these five areas, visit the SHEER Metrics page.

Each of the five SHEER metrics is assigned a score from 0 to 5 based on how deeply AI was used in that area. The number from each metric is multiplied by 4 to give a final score for that metric that ranges from 0 to 20. The sum of those numbers is the SheerScore. Visit the SheerScore page for more details.

The short answer is at this stage in the development of the framework, yes, the SheerScore relies on self-reporting by makers and as such can be manipulated. However, our long-term vision for SHEER includes third-party verification and auditing to ensure accuracy and integrity of the scores. Additionally, the SHEER framework is designed to promote transparency and trust, which we believe will incentivize honest reporting. Visit the SheerScore page for information on our long-term vision.

There are many who may not care if AI is involved in the creation of a given work (and some who may prefer it). But we believe many more do care and want some visibility and transparency into how much human creativity was involved in the creation of a work. The SheerScore is partly so makers can inform consumers about the role of AI in their work and partly for consumers who want some visibility into how deeply AI was used to create the work they're interested in.

Absolutely not! In fact, many makers may want their consumers to understand that AI wasn't involved at all in what they produced. In this case, their work would get a SheerScore of 0 and consumers would know that it was entirely human-made.
